Protection of eggs and better management of hatcheries
Turtle eggs need our protection from poachers and existing legislations must be strengthened and enforced to protect them. WWF is advocating for a comprehensive and holistic legislation to conserve these turtles. We are also working in partnership with Department of Fisheries Malaysia to reduce the illegal trade of turtle eggs as well as to ensure that best management practices are implemented at turtle hatcheries to increase the chances of their survival.Protection of natural nesting grounds
Not enough nesting beaches are protected in Malaysia. Rapid and uncontrolled coastline development has reduced much of the critically important turtle nesting areas. Lights from roads and buildings attract hatchlings and disorient them away from the sea. Hence, nesting beaches must be secluded from development and human activity. WWF’s goal is to protect important nesting grounds to ensure that turtle populations recover.Satellite tracking and tagging
Turtles are migratory and require different habitats throughout their lifecycles. Sea turtles are only dependent on the beach for egg incubation and spend most of their lifetime in coastal waters, feeding in coral reefs. Since 2006, eight hawksbills have been tagged with satellite transmitters to establish their migration routes and feeding grounds using satellite telemetry. Results from this research are crucial for a better understanding of their post-nesting movement and habitat use, which will help boost turtle protection efforts and provide the necessary evidence to motivate concerted, regional efforts to conserve the rich waters surrounding Malaysia and our neighbours.Local community involvement
The long-term success of turtle conservation efforts requires participation by local communities. WWF-Malaysia has been working with some of the local communities in Terengganu since September 2003 and facilitated the formation of a local community interest group for turtle conservation – Persatuan Khazanah Rakyat Ma’Daerah (MEKAR) in 2005. MEKAR, Terengganu State Department of Fisheries, WWF and various corporate sponsors have continuously organised turtle awareness events that attracted more than 1,200 participants collectively over the years. Other recent activities co-organised by WWF-Malaysia and MEKAR include the first Turtle Rescue Workshop to educate fishermen about methods of resuscitating and releasing turtles accidentally caught in fishing gear, a landmark turtle awareness workshop for Muslim religious leaders to enable them to integrate this information into their sermons, as well as the production of a teachers’ guide on the infusion of topics on turtles into the primary school curriculum..‘Penyu Balik ke Kampung Halamanku’ (Turtles returning to my Village)
Programme was initiated in 2006 to engage with the local communities in our turtle conservation efforts in Melaka. Key stakeholders include the fishermen, chalet operators and schools. Among the activities implemented include awareness talks on turtle conservation, turtle adoption programmes, beach clean-ups and turtle camps for schools. WWF is also working with the Kem Terendak military base camp (in partnership with the Department of Fisheries Melaka) on the satellite tracking research project to discover the migration routes and feeding grounds of hawksbills. Kem Terendak is one of the important nesting beaches for hawksbills in Melaka. They also adopted a turtle named “Terendak Queen” in 2007
Bersama kita membantunya. Thanks!
